Biography

I grew up in an Air Force family and have lived in Japan, Italy, Germany and a dozen states, yet I have spent the past 42 years in Cheyenne and in the neighborhoods of House District 11. I know my state and city and district well, and I am proud of its diversity.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English, a Master's degree in teaching and another Master's degree in communications. I have taught high school and have worked as a reporter in South Carolina and Wyoming.
I married here in 1984 and raised three children, staying at home to care for them and to use my time and talents in a variety of volunteer areas. I joined the League of Women Voters to learn more about civic engagement and promote voter service and after several years became the Wyoming LWV lobbyist. My children were lucky to grow up in Cheyenne but then left to fulfill their dreams in Colorado, New York and Cambodia.

Why I am Running

I bring to this race a background in education, good government and healthcare -- plus a strong history of nonpartisan public service that would benefit the people and businesses of House District and the State of Wyoming. I especially want to be part of the legislative debate on the issues I have advocated for several years: education, government and healthcare.
I think I can help restore that sense of mutual concern and problem-solving that has been a tradition in the Wyoming Legislature in past years, with a genuine interest in building on the strengths of our state's natural resources, its people and economy.
I will come to the Capitol with my background and positions, but I also will come with a mind that is open and eager to learn about issues from the experts, from the public and from other legislators. We have a citizen Legislature, for the most part, and we govern best when we bring our best ideas and care about each other.

Top 3 Priorities

Education: Finding a stable, reliable and adequate revenue stream(s) into the Foundation Account to fully suport the cost-based public school funding model -- both operations and facilities. Couple that with continued efforts to assure local districts operate efficiently to provide a quality public education across the state.

Good government: Resist efforts to create unnecessary barriers to the ballot box and promote statutes that make government open and accountable.

Healthcare: Use our state-run Medicaid program to cover some 25,000 uninsured adults and to strengthen our healthcare system. New moms who qualify for Medicaid should continue that coverage for a 12 months, so moms and babies can thrive for that crucial first year.
