Biography

I grew up in Virginia, and after graduating from college, spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo, West Africa. I then returned home, went to medical school and trained in Emergency Medicine. For over 25 years, I cared for patients in rural and urban Emergency Departments, mostly in the Rocky Mountain West. My husband, Robert McDevitt is also an ER doc, and we have 2 daughters, Molly and Dara who live in Montana. Beginning in 1994, I worked as a staff physician at Lake Hospital in Yellowstone. The hospital was open from May to September, and I regularly sent patients to St John's for a higher level of care. We came to Jackson on a regular basis for groceries etc. When Lake Hospital was became a Clinic in 2003, we lived full time in Albuquerque, where I took on multiple leadership and admin roles at several hospitals. In 2012, we bought our home in north Jackson, where we now live full time. I retired in 2021. I speak decent Spanish and French and like to hike, bike and ski.

Experience

I spent over 25 yrs as a front line ER doc, and have been medical director for multiple EDs and EMS services.
I ran Patient Safety/Quality at an 8 hospital system in NM for 5 yrs.
For 7 yrs, I was the President and CEO of the Western Montana Clinic, an independent physician group in Missoula. I've managed budgets, staff, legal issues, and regulations. In February, I became an Advisor to the Board at SJH. I understand our community and I know healthcare delivery.

Why I am Running

I spent most of my career as an emergency physician, providing healthcare to people from all walks of life, with a broad range of problems. This front line perspective taught me where our healthcare system works and where it fails. It also required excellent skills in developing trust with patients and solving problems with diverse healthcare teams. I have worked in multiple leadership positions to try and improve health and the care delivered at hospitals, in physicians offices and in community organizations that serve those in need. My work has made me who I am, and I am running because I want to make a difference whenever I can.

SJH is already an excellent hospital. We have excellent staff and a culture of caring. We are fiscally sound, and we are surviving in a system that does not favor independent rural hospitals. As a fairly new Advisor to the current Board of Trustees, I have been able to see the inner workings of the organization, and I truly believe it can and will continue to thrive. I also believe that more than any other candidate, I have outside perspectives and a depth of knowledge and skills that will contribute to that success. I would greatly appreciate your vote.

Top 3 Priorities

#1 Continued Quality Care Delivery
#2 Remaining an independent community hospital
#3 Improving trust between the community and the board through more openness and increased collaboration with local community organizations.
