Biography

Craig Shidler is a lifelong Big Horn County resident and a dedicated public safety professional with 16 years of service at the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office. Beginning his career in detention operations and advancing through leadership roles, he has built a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and service to the community. Craig is committed to strengthening public safety, supporting first responders, and maintaining the trust between law enforcement and the citizens of Big Horn County. As a candidate for Sheriff, he brings experience, proven leadership, and a deep commitment to serving the people of Big Horn County.

Experience

I began my public safety career in 2008 through EMS and joined the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office in 2010 as a detention officer. During my five years in detention, I served as a shift supervisor and led the facility’s training program. After moving to patrol, I developed the department’s Field Training Program and trained new recruits. Promoted to Sergeant, I now supervise special programs, school resource officers, case management, and officer performance.

Why I am Running

I have served in leadership roles throughout my career with the Sheriff’s Office. When Sheriff Blackburn announced his retirement, many members of the department expressed their trust and confidence in my ability to lead the agency into the future.
I am running for Sheriff because I believe I have the experience, vision, and leadership necessary to move the department forward. My goal is to provide clear direction and prepare our agency to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. I have a deep respect for our community and an unwavering commitment to constitutional law enforcement.
The citizens of Big Horn County deserve law enforcement professionals who are capable, knowledgeable, and prepared to serve. I have dedicated my career to developing those qualities within our organization. I am committed to serving with honor, protecting with vigilance, and maintaining the trust and confidence of the people we serve.

1. I will focus on leadership and employee development. The Sheriff’s Office is only as effective as the people who serve within it. I am committed to providing deputies, detention officers, and staff with the training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities necessary to excel in their roles. By investing in our employees, we build a stronger organization capable of delivering exceptional service to the public.
2. I will strengthen community trust and engagement. Public safety is most effective when law enforcement and the community work together. I will promote transparency, accountability, and open communication while continuing to build positive relationships with citizens, schools, businesses, and community organizations. Trust is earned through professionalism, consistency, and respectful service.
3. I will ensure the Sheriff’s Office remains prepared for future challenges. Law enforcement continues to face evolving threats, increasing demands, and changing technologies. I will work to modernize operations, improve training and equipment, and develop long-term strategies that position the agency for success. Preparing today for tomorrow’s challenges ensures we can continue protecting our communities effectively and responsibly.
